The Fort Lauderdale Planning and Zoning Board on Feb. 19 recommended approval for a stormwater pump station the city plans to build at 845 North Wester Avenue to reduce flood inundation in the Progressive Village neighborhood.
The board considered a request for public purpose use approval and multiple deviations to place a pump station, including reduced lot‑width requirements, a reduced corner yard setback, elimination of irrigation requirements and a reduced landscape buffer along the south property line. City representative Guillermo Rivera described the project’s purpose and design and said it will discharge collected stormwater to the North Fork of the New River.
Rivera said the project includes an electrical building to house pump controls, an emergency generator for power during outages, and Florida‑native landscaping to blend the facility into the neighborhood; he described architectural features intended to echo local Spanish/Colonial‑style homes. He also disclosed ownership of property that could be affected but stated he did not believe that created a conflict for voting purposes.
No public speakers testified on the item. The board moved to recommend approval of case UDP S24042, adopting the findings in the staff report. The roll call vote recorded all members present as voting yes: Jay Shechtman, Sherry McCartney, Patrick McTigue, Steve Gannon, Vice Chair Brad Cohen and Chair Weymouth. The motion passed.
City staff said the pump station is part of the city’s stormwater master plan and is intended to improve resiliency by decreasing flood stages and enabling discharge to the North Fork New River.
