San Juan County commissioners voted to approve $143,000 this year toward the purchase of a fire brush truck, part of a two-year payment plan for a $198,000 vehicle.
Fire Chief Dave Gallegos briefed the commission, explaining the county’s state program (referred to in the meeting as the PC) provides for equipment purchases and project work. “This year, I’m planning on using 143 to purchase this truck, and then I’ll be back next year to finish paying off the rest of it,” Gallegos said, noting the county typically budgets approximately $158,000 annually under the program and that he will request about $58,000 next year to complete the purchase.
Why it matters: County staff described the arrangement as preferable to sending money to the state and noted purchased equipment remains in the county to support local fire prevention and mitigation. Commissioners framed the purchase as replacing aging apparatus as part of a gradual rotation.
Process and vote: A motion to approve the $143,000 payment was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners noted the funds originate from a state-funded program but remain available for county project work and equipment under the state’s process.
Next steps: Staff said the remaining balance will be requested in next year’s budget cycle and the county will continue regular replacement planning for emergency apparatus.
