The Alma City Council voted to establish a commercial rehabilitation district for the property commonly known as 130 West Superior Street, authorizing the city to proceed under the referenced statute and to support redevelopment of the long-vacant downtown building.
Brian Smith, speaking on behalf of the credit-union project team, described the former Ashland Portraits building and said the rehabilitation will include new HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems and signage. Smith said the project would bring a new branch to Alma and Gratiot County, and that it will fully rehabilitate a space that has been vacant for several years.
During the meeting staff and councilors discussed a mismatch in the parcel number printed in the draft resolution; a council member moved to correct the parcel number and the council approved the corrected resolution by voice vote. No members of the public spoke in opposition during the hearing.
Council members noted the project will add a small number of jobs, rehabilitate a long-vacant downtown storefront and complete redevelopment of that block. The resolution authorizes the establishment of the commercial rehabilitation district; any tax-related benefits or incentives tied to the district will follow the city’s administrative process and applicable state law.
