The Public Service Committee on Feb. 24 ratified the appointment of Myers Engineers, Ltd. to provide professional services for demolition planning of the Tower parking garage and to prepare a plan for replacement or redevelopment. The motion passed 9–0.
Alton Davis, director of architecture with Myers Engineers, said a prior structural investigation determined the deterioration was severe and that the parish’s funds would be better spent on demolition and replacement than on structural repairs. Davis said Myers would study options for replacement, including whether to preserve the existing drive‑through payment lane and how to protect government equipment during storms.
Council members said the garage has been a longstanding issue and urged that design work consider access for residents (including a drive‑through) and the potential for the new facility to serve as protective storage for equipment during storms. Staff noted a capital outlay request has been filed previously for a replacement structure; Myers Engineers will prepare demolition and design options for the parish to consider.
