Lincoln Trail students present Youth Leadership Club projects including holiday aid and ongoing community drives

Fifth-grade students from Lincoln Trail Elementary presented their Youth Leadership Club to the Mahomet-Seymour Board of Education at the Feb. 18 meeting, outlining ongoing service and school-improvement projects.
Students said the club has about 20 fifth-grade members who meet Monday mornings and organize committees for recycling, cafeteria cleanup, morning greeters and “Compass buddies” who visit once weekly to spend time with Compass program students. Club members described a recent “PAX Joy” project that raised funds and collected toiletries and gifts for 30 families during the holiday season; students said businesses and families donated to the effort.
Other activities reported included a food and toiletry drive for the school pantries, a water-bottle-and-fuzzy-sock collection for a collaborative dog-treat project with the Atlas program, a kindness-tree display with notes from students, and student involvement in taste tests for possible cafeteria menu items. Several students described taking classroom-by-classroom collections for drives and helping with second-grade tours of the elementary school.
The board and public thanked the students for their presentation. Board members praised the students’ civic engagement and noted the variety of community-focused projects the club runs.
