Mercedes ISD to spend grant funds on sensory rooms, communication devices and staff training for students with autism

Mercedes ISD trustees approved purchases of sensory supplies, communication devices and training using an Innovative Services for Students with Autism grant. District staff described the purchases as part of a two-year grant obtained through a Regional Service Center program; year-one startup costs were higher and the district expects a second-year award provided specified deliverables are met.

District special-education staff said the funding will be used to create or expand sensory rooms, acquire communication devices (including iPads and Microsoft Surface Pros where needed), buy sensory supplies and provide training for staff and families. Staff explained that sensory supports reduce behavioral triggers (sound, light, tactile sensitivity) and allow students with autism to deescalate, participate in instruction and develop independence. The district plans training sessions for staff and family engagement events to ensure parents and campus staff have tools and strategies in place.

Administrators said the grant purchases will be distributed across campuses to address growing needs in Mercedes ISD’s special-education population. The motion to approve the purchases passed unanimously; staff noted all purchases are covered by the grant and will not require district general-fund allocations.

District leaders asked staff to meet grant deliverables to ensure eligibility for the second year of funds and indicated they will monitor implementation and training schedules.
