Board holds first readings on AI, electronic-device and spectator-code policies; work on AI policy to continue

Board members on Feb. 18 heard first readings of a package of policies and regulations the Policy Committee recommended for first reading, including a new acceptable-use policy addressing generative artificial intelligence, a policy on electronic communication devices and a spectator code of conduct for interscholastic events.
“P2365 is the acceptable use of generative artificial intelligence,” the committee report said, listing the AI policy among three new policies proposed for adoption. Members noted that the AI policy is new territory and will require more time and input before a final draft is ready for a second reading.
The committee said the electronic communication-device policy (5516) and the spectator code of conduct (9163) were adapted from templates provided by the district’s policy vendor and reviewed with school administrators. The spectator-code draft was prepared by the high school principal and athletic director and the committee submitted minor wording changes for board review before second reading.
“We have plenty of time before we have to complete one,” a policy committee member said of the AI policy, urging careful drafting and stakeholder input. The board approved the package for first reading; final adoption will follow subsequent review and any revisions requested by members or the public.
The committee asked board members to review the draft materials posted in the board’s shared documents so they can provide feedback ahead of the next meeting.
