Board discusses fencing, paving, PA upgrades and vape-sensor purchases; projects funded from referendum and COPS grant

The Hawthorne board’s Buildings and Grounds committee provided an update Feb. 18 on multiple facilities projects, including targeted fencing repairs, parking-lot paving, brickwork assessments and districtwide safety equipment purchases.
“Those quotes are for one section of fencing at each location in order to repair or replace a void in the existing fencing,” said Mr. Doyle, speaking for the committee about Roosevelt and Washington schools. He also described planned pavement work behind the high school gym and a masonry assessment of a retaining wall by the high school weight room.
The committee reported a kickoff meeting for the Roosevelt Room project and an athletic-facility assessment by the district architect. It said the buildings-and-grounds supervisor would meet with a masonry contractor and with Pascat Construction Management to schedule summer work.
On safety and communication upgrades, the committee described a multi-part project that would buy PA-system upgrades, vape detectors for Lincoln Middle School and the high school, and radios for district staff. “These projects would be funded from roughly $550,000 left over from the referendum, the COPS grant which we've received and as well as funds that we previously set aside,” Mr. Doyle said. He told the board finance would provide final numbers.
Committee members also said meetings are planned with vendors to secure quotes and that the district’s architect will complete the athletic-facility assessment to inform next steps. The board approved the committee recommendations later in the meeting.
The committee did not provide final contract awards during the Feb. 18 meeting; members said additional quotes and a finance review are needed before work is scheduled or contracts executed.
Taken together, the projects aim to repair campus infrastructure, address identified masonry needs, and add equipment the district says will support safety and communications across buildings.
