Police Chief Mills on Feb. 24 administered the oath and badge to new Milford Police Officer Joey Mattson and highlighted department training and equipment gains.
Why it matters: Hiring and equipment updates affect public safety staffing and response capacity. Staff also reported progress on an encampment that the department and partners are addressing.
Chief Mills introduced Joey Mattson and described his background: Mattson graduated from Moller High School in 2015, earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Ohio University and completed basic police training at Great Oaks Police Academy in 2024. Chief Mills said the department is selective in its hiring and presented Mattson with a badge and a challenge coin at the meeting. "Tonight, Joey, you officially earned the right to wear our badge and are officially indoctrinated as a member of the Milford Police Department," Chief Mills said during the swearing-in.
In the police report, Chief Mills said sworn members completed AED and CPR training provided by the Milford Community Fire Department and that three AEDs donated by the Cincinnati Rotary are now on patrol. The report noted 2 offenses, 27 auto accidents, 162 citations and 124 warnings in the period covered by the report. Chief Mills also reported that an area resident donated an AR-15 to the department; he announced that the department had received funds from the Day Heights Firefighters Memorial Association to help buy a drone, fitness equipment and two ballistic shields.
Chief Mills said Detective Lane has been working on the homeless encampment at Terrell Park and is "making a lot of progress" in collaboration with city administration, zoning and the Milford Community Fire Department. The police hired Joey Mattson to fill a vacancy created when Officer Heather Mason resigned.
Fire and EMS District Chief Nicholl told council the Claremont County Fire Investigation team held a multi-state seminar and reported a recent response to flooding on the Little Miami River, where crews rescued two adults and a dog with assistance from neighboring departments; no injuries were reported. Nicholl also announced a lieutenant promotional ceremony scheduled for Monday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. at the firehouse.
No formal votes were required for the swearing-in or most operational updates; council received the reports and thanked staff.
