Tommy Kolovic, a resident, told the Michigan City Parks and Recreation Board on Feb. 19 that he believes the nonfunctional fountain at Millennium Plaza should be demolished and the space returned to public use for events.
Kolovic said the fountain — installed in 1999 — lacks historical value in his view and is a nonfunctional piece of infrastructure that impedes the plaza’s use for concerts and other events.
Parks staff responded that the city commissioned an assessment by Hass & Associates and engaged Chicago Fountain for a separate consultative review; the city has received the Chicago Fountain assessment and is reviewing it while continuing to collect public input.
Why it matters: Millennium Plaza is a central event space in downtown Michigan City; decisions about removal, restoration or reuse will affect public events, design and potential costs. At the meeting staff did not announce a firm decision or timeline; they only said assessments are being reviewed and public input is being collected.
What’s next: Staff will continue reviewing consultant reports and collecting public input before returning a recommendation to the board.
