Lincoln County adopts resolution supporting state railroad-safety bill LB37

The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners voted Feb. 18 to adopt Resolution 2025-04 in support of Legislative Bill 37, a state measure introduced this session addressing railroad safety and transparency.
Commissioner Bruns introduced the motion and said the bill would provide "a little bit more teeth" to encourage railroad compliance and improve technology use, training and reporting to first responders. "It allows for greater training, and more transparency as well, particularly with, first responders," Bruns said.
Commissioners discussed recent derailments and a railcar explosion in the region that led to local evacuations; Bruns said the Union Pacific had implemented some county recommendations but more work is needed. The board unanimously approved the resolution by roll-call vote; Bruns said he would testify on behalf of Lincoln County at the bill's hearing, tentatively scheduled for March 10.
Commissioners asked county staff to provide copies of the resolution for committee distribution and to arrange for Bruns to deliver testimony at the legislative hearing.
