Bedford County fire chief reports rise in structure calls; free smoke detectors and new rescue tools noted

“We are seeing portable heating systems and extension cords,” Mark said, warning residents to take care during sub-zero wind chills. He noted the county installed eight smoke detectors in the past month and that the detectors and installation are free under a state-funded program; the county covers some related costs.
The fire department expects delivery of a replacement fire apparatus to replace an older unit described as from 1982. Staff also reported that rescue tools funded through a Firehouse Subs grant were delivered and that the county will forward shipping documentation to the donor so the grant can be finalized.
