Practical nursing program reports strong pass rate; academy enrollment up and open house rescheduled

The district’s Practical Nursing Coordinator, Mrs. Haynes, reported that the program will hold a graduation next month and that the current pass rate stands at 87.5 percent (14 of 16 passed); one student passed after a retake and another is scheduled for a second attempt. The coordinator said the upcoming graduation invitations were sent and the ceremony was moved to 6:30 p.m.
Principal Crossen provided application totals for the incoming class: as of the meeting, 186 total applications were reported, with 131 from Midland County High School, 23 from East Juniata and 32 from Juniata. Crossen said application counts per feeder school ranged from about 5 to 28 and confirmed the district expects to turn some applicants away because program capacity is limited.
Director Hicks said the open house originally scheduled for an evening event was canceled due to weather and staff decided to reschedule for mid-April (date to be announced). The plan is to invite accepted students and their families to visit classrooms, and possibly expand the event into a community night with alumni and about 30 employers who had been scheduled to attend for co-op, job-shadow and internship recruitment.
Director Hicks also reported on skills competition results: two students advanced to state-level competition in April — Beth McKnight in medical assisting and Jackson Yoder in telecommunication cabling. The director described close results at the regional competition and noted other upcoming contests, including the Pennsylvania Auto Show competition and the ProStart culinary competition.
No formal board action was recorded for these program updates. Board members and staff discussed logistics for the open house and the timing of the next board meeting so trustees could attend the LPN graduation.
