Carbon County to provide $1,000 toward Babe Ruth regional tournament; approves $500 Graduation Spectacular donation

The Carbon County Commission approved local funding Feb. 19 to help bring a regional youth baseball tournament to Price and to support a community graduation event.
Jill Emerson, Utah commissioner for Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth, requested county assistance to pay a contract fee required by Babe Ruth incorporation to host the 13‑year‑old regional tournament in Price July 20–26. Emerson said the fee is $3,300 and that about 10 teams — roughly 500 people — are expected to travel to the community, staying in hotels and patronizing restaurants.
Commissioners noted the city had already committed $1,000 toward the fee. The commission approved a motion to provide $1,000 from county funds to help cover the contract fee; county staff said they will process payment after receiving an invoice.
On a separate item, Kara Thane requested the county’s usual $500 donation for the 2025 Graduation Spectacular, an annual event organized by volunteers to provide a supervised celebration for graduates. Commissioner(s) approved the $500 donation; one commissioner recused from that vote because they serve on the event committee.
Both motions passed by voice vote. County staff said they will coordinate with event organizers to complete invoicing and payment.
