APS board extends superintendent contract to June 30, 2028, contingent on progress review

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education voted to extend Superintendent Blakey’s contract by two years to June 30, 2028, after an executive session review and a roll-call vote that recorded unanimous support.
Board members said the extension is intended to preserve momentum on district goals. The motion to extend the contract was made by Board Member Heather Benavides and seconded by Board Member Tapio Romero; the board conducted a February–March review in executive session that the board said informed the decision.
The extension was discussed during an executive session convened under the Public Meetings Act to consider a limited personnel matter regarding the superintendent’s evaluation. An ad hoc committee had explored linking superintendent incentive pay to measurable progress on board goals; the committee and Superintendent Dr. Blakey indicated continued continuity would better serve efforts to improve student outcomes. The board’s statement said other compensation matters — including performance-based pay, cost-of-living adjustments and state salary increases — may be negotiated when the contract is renewed in the fall.
“I move to extend the superintendent’s contract by 2 years to 06/30/2028 based on demonstrated progress towards meeting the board’s goals as specified in the contract,” Board Member Heather Benavides said when she made the motion. Board Member Tapio Romero seconded the motion. The board then took a roll-call vote: Tapio Romero, Heather Benavides, Danelle Lestorga, Josefina Dominguez and Courtney Jackson all voted yes; the presiding officer announced the motion passed.
Board members thanked Superintendent Blakey and his team for their work on student outcomes. The board noted the February and March executive-session review was used to evaluate progress toward the board’s goals and that the extension is contingent on documented progress as specified in the superintendent’s contract.
The board announced its next regular meeting for March 5, 2025, at 5 p.m. at the Alice and Bruce King Education Complex and via livestream on livestream.aps.edu.
