Checkers plans exterior remodel; CRA staff says project likely to go straight to permitting

Temple Terrace community development staff told the CRA that Checkers, at 8800 North 50 Sixth Street in the CRA area, has applied for an exterior remodel limited to façade changes and not involving site or structural alterations.
Greg Polley, community development director, said Checkers staff met with city staff on February 11 to discuss the proposed façade update. Polley said the restaurant is switching to a new corporate prototype and expects the work to be a cosmetic “face-lift” that would not change building layout or site configuration. The city code allows façade work to go straight to permitting if proposed improvements do not exceed 50% of the assessed value of the property; Polley said Checkers told staff it expects its changes to remain below that threshold.
Polley said the restaurant likely predates the CRA and therefore did not undergo the current CRA development review that newer projects face. Polley offered to return with any historical conditions of approval if the board wanted that report. Board members had no objection and asked staff to pass along any substantive feedback to the applicant.
No formal action was required or taken at the meeting; Polley said staff would carry comments back to the applicant and proceed with permitting if criteria were met.
