Barbersville Middle pilots job‑shadowing for eighth‑graders after board consent

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Cabell County Schools presented a pilot job‑shadowing program for Barbersville Middle School eighth‑grade students as part of the consent agenda at its Feb. 18 board meeting.
Miss Kelly Watts introduced the proposal and said the program — listed on the agenda as item 04/2011 — would let eighth‑grade students sign up to spend a day observing at a local business after completing the district packet and permission forms. “It just gives them the opportunity after going through our career literacy program, to have a hands on experience in a place of business,” Watts said.
Watts told the board staff had reached out to roughly 70 businesses and other entities and that the district had worked with Mr. Stewart to secure liability coverage and the required permission forms. Students who complete a job‑shadow experience will return a reflection sheet required by the program, district staff said. The item was placed on the consent agenda and approved with the other consent items by voice vote.
Supporters said the pilot complements career‑literacy work already underway and gives younger students an early chance to explore careers before elective and career‑tech program choices in high school.
The consent agenda vote that included 04/2011 passed by voice vote; the motion to approve the consent agenda was made by Miss Neely and seconded by Mister Abess.
