Goshen High showcases ASL class and student projects at board meeting

GOSHEN, N.Y. — Goshen High School teachers and students presented the school’s American Sign Language course to the Goshen Central School District Board of Education on Sept. 15, describing class projects, student collaboration and instances where students used ASL outside school.
Presenters said the ASL course is a small, hands-on class that emphasizes continuous signing practice and close student interaction. "ASL is a fun hands on learning experience," one presenter said. Seniors Sofia Gowans and Sadie Rogers described the course structure and projects; Gowans said the class ‘‘drilled the habit of continuous and fast signing’’ through a music-video project and recounted using ASL in a recent summer interaction with a deaf colleague. Rogers said the course made her feel "smart and happy" and credited teacher Miss Bernhardt for making the class accessible.
The program was introduced during a larger segment of high school academic pathway presentations. Administrators said the course is intended to build language skills students can use in work and community settings.
Board members thanked students and staff and encouraged continued showcasing of positive student work at public meetings.
The presentation included short student videos and two live student remarks that board members and the interim superintendent praised for demonstrating instructional outcomes and student engagement.
Looking ahead, the district will continue presenting academic pathway updates at board meetings; no policy or budget action tied specifically to the ASL course was taken at the Sept. 15 meeting.
