Opelika council approves alcohol licenses, event closures, emergency purchases and two ordinances

The Opelika City Council on Feb. 18 approved a package of routine business items including multiple alcohol licenses and temporary street closures for community events, ratified emergency purchases for the city’s wastewater lift station, authorized equipment purchases, approved personnel reclassifications and adopted two ordinances affecting planning procedures and the 2025 municipal election schedule.
The measures were part of the council’s general business, resolutions and second-reading ordinances and were handled largely without debate. Council members recorded unanimous voice or roll-call votes on the items during the meeting.

On personnel and classification matters the council adopted Resolution No. 5, which reassigns the municipal senior probation officer and probation officer from the city administrator to the municipal court administrator, modifies job descriptions for the court administrator, court magistrate, senior municipal probation officer and probation officer, modifies the job description for the revenue license and tax examiner and reclassifies that revenue position from pay grade 108 to pay grade 110. The resolution also reclassified the IT Technical Specialist 2 and the facilities manager positions from nonexempt to exempt status.
On ordinances (second reading) the council adopted a zoning-procedures ordinance that changes the filing deadline for rezoning and conditional-use permit applications to no less than 27 days before the planning commission meeting (the existing ordinance required 21 days). The council also adopted an ordinance establishing procedures and key dates for the 2025 municipal election: the general election date was set for Aug. 26, 2025; qualifying for mayor and the five council places opens Tuesday, June 10, 2025, and closes Tuesday, June 24, 2025 (a 14-day filing period).
The council reappointed Ken Ridley to the Lee-Russell Council of Governments with a term expiring January 2027. Several community event permits (including Collinwood Christmas Luminaries on Dec. 12, 2025) were approved.
