Norfolk library trustees cite facility upgrades, rising program attendance

Charles Johnson, vice chair of the Norfolk Public Library Board of Trustees, told the City Council on Feb. 11 that the board has focused the past year on facility improvements, expanded programming and outreach.

Johnson said the board advised city leaders and worked with library administration on upgrades at several branches, including Richard A. Tucker, Bridal and Lafayette, and that Larchmont is undergoing infrastructure work “that hopefully will be completed by the end of the year.” He described a reworked Explorium at the Richard A. Tucker branch and said the system is expanding hours and digital services. “We are advisors,” Johnson told council members.

The board highlighted a new city initiative it calls “Believe in Learning,” which Johnson said has increased programs and outreach and expanded meals and book distribution through partnerships with Norfolk Public Schools and other local groups. He said the system recorded more than a half‑million visits last year and offered “over 200” programs.

Council members thanked Johnson and the trustees for volunteer work and advocacy. Councilor Page asked how council could help publicize events; Johnson suggested circulating printed materials, using the library website and having board members speak at civic groups. Mayor and other council members praised the trustees’ role in supporting library staff and expanding services.

The trustees noted a planned 13th library site is in design and described ongoing efforts to make more programs accessible digitally via email newsletters, Facebook and Instagram. They invited council members to contact the board or library administration for more information.

Looking ahead, Johnson said the board will continue to advise the administration on facility improvements, program growth and outreach to residents.
