Murray Senior Recreation Center reports holiday and veterans events, outreach services to council
Summary
The Murray Senior Recreation Center updated the council on fall and winter programming including its annual veterans luncheon and holiday and Thanksgiving meals; staff described partner organizations and services used by seniors.
At the Feb. 18 Committee of the Whole, the Murray Senior Recreation Center provided a report on recent programming and partnerships.
Center volunteers and staff recapped events held in November and December: an annual veterans luncheon on Nov. 4 with a color guard, national anthem and lunch prepared by onsite staff; a Thanksgiving meal (center staff and volunteers set up 25 decorated tables; entertainment provided by the Riverton Jazz Band); and an annual holiday meal on Dec. 20 with entertainment and door prizes. Presenters said 31 veterans attended the luncheon (including five in their nineties) and the center gave thank‑you certificates in partnership with Senior Helpers and other organizations that help seniors navigate federal aid and care.
Presenters emphasized partnerships the center uses to help seniors access care and benefits — for example, Senior Care Associates helping veterans qualify for federal aid‑and‑attendance pension benefits and other local providers helping with personal care, errands and companionship. The center thanked the mayor and municipal staff for participation at events and staff noted ongoing volunteer and chef support.
The center’s update was informational only; council members thanked center staff and volunteers for programming and community outreach.
