Moorefield robotics students report regional successes, scholarships and likely national advancement

Students from the Moorefield robotics teams addressed the commissioners to report expansion of their program, student scholarship wins and recent competition results.
Presenters said the program now fields 21 robotics teams across Moorefield schools — 11 elementary teams, multiple middle-school squads and a high-school team. Two middle-school teams advanced from a December qualifier to the American Robotics Invitational in Jersey City, N.J.; presenters said they expect to learn in March whether they will advance to a world championship event in Houston or another premier competition. Two students, identified as Adam and Ralph during the presentation, said scholarships to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology were awarded in part because of their robotics experience.
On design and performance, the students described this season’s robot (nicknamed “Sassy Jack”), the game pieces and scoring tasks, and elements such as a multi-degree-of-freedom arm and a pull-up maneuver that allows additional end-of-game points. Presenters said their robot performed reliably at a December home qualifier and that judge feedback suggested a strong chance of advancement.
Commissioners thanked the students and congratulated scholarship recipients. No county action was requested.
