Council approves arena HVAC contract; amendment to require condensate capture fails

Councilman Gil Hernandez sought to add an amendment directing design features to capture condensate from HVAC equipment for reuse in landscaping and arena water features. Staff and council discussed the project phasing: Edmonds said the current phase includes chillers and cooling towers while most condensate would be generated by dehumidifiers scheduled for a later phase. "Part of this As I recall, they all keep they all create some condensation, not just the dehumidifiers," Councilman Hernandez said; staff noted the bulk of recoverable condensate would come in phase two, and the design for that phase is about 30 percent complete.
The council considered whether to include condensate capture now or wait and evaluate the second phase; members asked staff to analyze the cost and feasibility. A motion to amend the contract award to include condensate‑capture requirements failed on the council floor. The original contract award motion then carried.
