Allegany County Office for the Aging adds federal and state grant funds, approves one hire

The Allegany County Office for the Aging reported increased demand for Medicare counseling and home-delivered meals, accepted additional federal and state grant funds and was authorized to fill one aging services technician position.
Anita Madison of the Office for the Aging said contacts for Medicare insurance counseling increased to 639 in the reported month compared with 281 in the same period last year. She told the board the office provided more than 10,000 meals to older adults in the county across congregate, home-delivered and “go and dine” programs and is using a state-funded Go Go Grandparent program to supply rides, primarily for medical appointments not covered by other transportation.
The panel approved a budget adjustment after the county received $22,159 under MIPA (Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act) funds; the department had budgeted $16,384 and plans to allocate the $5,775 difference to regular pay, retirement, mileage, phone and advertising. The board also approved acceptance and appropriation of $28,950 in American Rescue Plan federal funds plus $4,100 in client contributions to support vaccine assistance, home care, home-delivered meals and personal emergency response systems; those funds were allocated across contracts, general and office supplies, mileage and fees.
Madison said the county recorded 44 Go Go Grandparent rides in December and, as of Feb. 19 in the current month, had 47 rides scheduled; the program serves county residents age 60 and older and is funded through the New York State Office for the Aging.
Separately, the board approved filling one vacant full-time aging service technician position (grade 13). Madison said the position is 95% state-funded and 5% county-funded and will perform required in-home assessments for meal delivery eligibility, New York Connects duties and some insurance counseling.
Votes: Motions to accept the MIPA funds, accept the ARP funds and authorize the hire each passed by voice vote with all members present saying “aye.”
The Office for the Aging report and the approved hires and appropriations will be recorded in the department’s 2025 budget adjustments and grant records.
