Council honors students and recognizes East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center at meeting

The City Council recognized student delegates who participated in Student Government Day and heard remarks from schools and community partners on Feb. 18.
Participants from several West Covina‑area high schools described touring city departments and learning about budgeting and municipal operations. Mayor Tony Wu and Councilmembers thanked the Kiwanis Club and city staff for the annual program; students and principals described the event as a practical civic‑education experience.
The council also received a presentation from the East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center (ESGVJCC). Tim (president) and Pearl O’Mia (executive director) described the center’s mission, programming and nearly 100‑year history: the center was founded in 1936 on donated farmland and today serves more than 5,000 members with programs in culture, education, martial arts and recreation, including a sister‑city student exchange with Otawara, Japan. The council thanked the center for two decades of leadership by Pearl O’Mia and noted upcoming events including the April 26 Cherry Blossom Festival.
