Panel advances bill limiting service to one higher-education board at a time

Chairman Hawk said the measure reiterates language from earlier focus acts and "reinforces that aspect that 1 board member is serving 1 institution at a time." A committee member asked whether the prohibition would apply to private institutions as well; Hawk replied, "It would cover all institutions." A subsequent clarification from Hawk limited the restriction to boards that govern higher-education institutions and does not prevent service on unrelated boards, such as local arts center boards.
The committee recorded no debate beyond clarifying questions and voted unanimously to send HB 1006 to the full Education Committee. The clerk recorded 5 ayes and 0 nays.
