District reports test participation rates, outlines regents schedule amid state testing changes

Mr. Carter, a district staff member who presented participation rates, said elementary ELA participation was high: grade 3 had 190 of 205 students (93%), grade 4 had 193 of 207 (93%), and grade 5 had 184 of 204 (90%), for an elementary total of 567 of 616 (92%). For middle-school ELA, Carter reported grade 6 at 181 of 209 (87%), grade 7 at 176 of 222 (79%), and grade 8 at 163 of 216 (75%), with a middle-school total of 520 of 645 (81%).
On math, the presenter reported strong elementary participation—grades 3–5 ranged from 87% to 92%—with an overall elementary math participation near 90%. Middle-school math participation was lower, with grade 8 reported at 130 of 216 (60%) and an overall middle-school math participation of about 72%.
Superintendent Dr. Coates (reported in the meeting as "doctor Coates") and staff noted federal guidance encourages a 90% participation target in both math and ELA; the district has reached that threshold in some grades and continues targeted outreach in others. Carter and other staff described ongoing professional development and preparations for NextGen changes to Regents exams, including a first-year administration of the new geometry Regents and the planned transition timeline: some current science Regents (chemistry, physics) are expected to be administered through 2027 before the full NextGen transition; the district said it plans professional development this summer and next year to align curriculum and teacher training with the new exams.
No votes resulted from the presentation. District staff expressed appreciation for faculty efforts to increase participation and reiterated they will monitor state guidance on new graduation measures and testing.
