Judge sets $85,000 bond for man charged with aggravated assault; GPS and treatment ordered

Judge Stephanie Boyd set bond at $85,000 Monday for Cody Salazar, who is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and placed multiple conditions on release including full GPS monitoring and mandatory drug testing.

The order came after a bond hearing in the 187th District Court where defense counsel Robert Gear argued for a reduction and presented testimony from Salazar and his mother about the family’s financial situation. Assistant District Attorney Ashley Jones opposed release at the requested level, citing the seriousness of the offense and Salazar’s prior record.

Boyd said the court’s objective was to set an amount that would ensure Salazar’s return to court while addressing public-safety concerns. “The court is gonna set the bond at $85,000,” Boyd said on the record, and added specific conditions to the release.

The judge specified no contact between Salazar and the complainant and no contact with minors. The court ordered full GPS monitoring (fees waived), a referral to the Center for Health Care Services for evaluation and treatment, and regular, random urinalysis testing.

Defense counsel argued that the family could not immediately afford a high cash bond and offered testimony from Salazar and his mother about income and assets. The court allowed testimony and weighed it in the decision, but stated the aggravated nature of the offense and the defendant’s prior history supported a substantial secured bond.

Salazar remained in custody at the close of the hearing pending posting of bail or satisfaction of the court’s conditions. The court also noted potential mental-health considerations on the record and referred Salazar to appropriate services as part of the release plan.

A follow-up hearing was set by the clerk’s office as required by routine docket procedure.
