Gilroy accepts donated therapy dog "Maui" to support police community engagement

The Gilroy City Council voted unanimously to accept the donation of a trained therapy dog named Maui from the Leadership Gilroy class of 2024.
The donation was presented at the meeting and public works and police staff described Maui as a therapy animal to be used by the police department for employee support, victim services, school resource officer engagement and public events. Staff said Maui replaces a previous canine used for different duties and that the handler will be a department officer who will care for the dog off-duty.
Council discussion included operational questions about housing and assignment. Captain Luke Powell and other staff said the officer-trainer is currently keeping the dog and that the officer intended to retain Maui after retirement. A member of Leadership Gilroy's class publicly thanked the council for accepting the donation and said the class worked on the project as a heartfelt community initiative. The motion to accept the donation was made by Councilmember Fugazi and seconded by Councilmember Ramirez; roll call was 7-0.
