Mayor Sosa presented the Mayor’s Outstanding Citizen Award Wednesday to Sam Ferreira for his long service to West Downey Little League and the Downey community.
Ferreira, a Downey resident since 1984 and a Warren High School graduate, was recognized for 17 years of league service and for helping operate a 501(c)(3) organization that provides affordable baseball for area children. Council remarks said the league serves “over 400 kids per year” and that volunteers manage fundraising, field maintenance and operations.
“Baseball is expensive enough,” Ferreira said in brief remarks. He described the league’s fundraising and volunteer efforts that keep fees low — he said competitive programs nearby can cost several hundred dollars per month while West Downey charges about $160 per season — and invited the public to a grand-opening and homecoming event for the renovated Stauffer (Welch) Field on March 8.
Council members and Ferreira highlighted the league’s nonprofit status, volunteer base and partnerships with the Downey Unified School District for facility use and upkeep. Ferreira said the league is focused on maintaining affordable access to youth sports and described the field as “our home away from home.”
