Washington Unified presents midyear LCAP and California Dashboard; Middle College reports high college-passage and 100% graduation for latest cohort

Lede: Washington Unified presented a midyear update on its Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and the California School Dashboard metrics at the Feb. 13 Board of Education meeting, reporting mixed results: district improvements in graduation and college-and-career indicators but continued gaps in math and English language arts for several student groups.

Body: Autry Street explained that the California Dashboard compares two years of data to produce color-coded performance levels (red through blue) and that some indicators do not yet have color ratings because a second year of data is required (science was the example cited). The district’s 2024 dashboard snapshot showed:

- English language arts (ELA): district-level orange performance; several subgroups declined, including English learners and students with disabilities; foster youth and homeless students showed notable gains in distance-from-standard metrics. - Mathematics: orange overall, with several subgroups in red that declined over the two-year comparison; Hispanic and several other groups showed gains. - Graduation rate: green at the district level (district 92.9% vs. state 86.7%); multiple student groups improved and several groups saw double-digit cohort increases. - College and career readiness: green districtwide; the indicator combines multiple measures such as AP scores, dual enrollment, a–g completion, and CTE pathways. - Chronic absenteeism: improved (declined) to 20.6% across TK–8 (a reduction of 5.1 percentage points). The district noted a 2019 pre-pandemic baseline of 10.5% as a target to approach. - Suspension rate: the district reported declines with many groups improving; dashboard reporting counts a student once per year regardless of number of suspensions.

Groat and Street highlighted differentiated assistance: because some student groups (notably students with disabilities on several indicators) did not make expected progress, the district will work with the Yolo County Office of Education to identify supports; differentiated assistance does not automatically include direct state fiscal resources to the district but does bring county-level support and professional development.

Washington Middle College: Principal updates showed 149 students counted for dashboard measures; the school reported high college-passage rates in the cohort (for example, dual-enrollment success rates by grade), strong math and ELA scores where reported and a 100% graduation rate for the most recent class. Because of small subgroup sizes, some Middle College indicators do not display a color on the statewide dashboard, but the site-level data were presented to the board.

Ending: District leaders said they will continue LCAP engagement with families and LCAP committees and return to the board in June for a public hearing and adoption of the LCAP and related budget decisions.
