The district’s human-resources office provided an annual hiring update Wednesday, reporting 93 new hires in the last hiring cycle across certified and classified roles and describing steps to recruit and retain staff in high-need areas.
Miss Herrera Ford, director of human resources, summarized recruiting events and new partnerships. She said the district hosted its first paraprofessional hiring event over the summer, filled eight paraprofessional positions at that event, and has established a working relationship with Joliet Junior College to identify candidates who are training for paraprofessional licensure.
Herrera Ford said the district employs about 500 certified staff and 424 classified staff, noted an overall classified retention rate of about 86% and reported 56 classified hires this year. The district also has targeted recruitment for bilingual social-worker and bilingual instructional-coach positions at Joliet West, and it plans additional outreach and career-fair attendance to fill open positions.
On onboarding and retention, Herrera Ford described a certified onboarding program with new-teacher orientation and a four-year induction program and said classified onboarding is scheduled monthly after board approval; she said the district provides targeted trainings for student-teacher candidates, including AVID-module training to credential them as AVID tutors.
Board members asked about exit interviews and trend analysis. Herrera Ford said she shares exit-interview findings with the superintendent and the relevant supervisor and that the district collects feedback; board members requested a more formal aggregated exit-interview analysis to track patterns across departments.
Ending: Herrera Ford said the district will continue recruiting efforts with partners, expand onboarding plans for administrators and will provide requested details such as AVAC campus distributions and further onboarding documentation to trustees.
