Senate recognizes Black History Month, welcomes guests to Capitol

Senator Taylor used floor time Wednesday to mark Black History Month, introduce visiting guests and highlight contributions by Black leaders in Nevada’s history.
Taylor introduced Trisha Braxton, recently elected to the Nevada State Board of Education, and Dwayne Young, who were visiting the Capitol. “Black history is American history,” Taylor said, calling on colleagues to remember civil-rights leaders and historical figures such as Joe Neal and Bernice Mathews who helped shape Nevada politics.
Taylor cited a list of Nevada figures who advanced civil rights, education and legal representation and connected that history to ongoing disparities in education, economic opportunity, health care and criminal justice. She urged lawmakers to “recommit ourselves to the work that remains” to achieve equity and representation.
Senator Cannizzaro later thanked colleagues representing several districts and acknowledged the contributions of visiting officials as the Senate continued its day.
