Nevada Senate adopts concurrent resolution memorializing Nina Laxalt

The Nevada Senate on Wednesday adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 1, a memorial honoring Nina Laxalt and offering condolences to her family.

The resolution recognizes Laxalt’s more than two decades of work in Nevada government and advocacy, citing her contributions to agriculture, ranching, animal welfare, and efforts to preserve Nevada history. Senators who spoke on the Senate floor highlighted her mentorship of new lobbyists and legislators, particularly women, and her role in statewide preservation projects.

“Her dedication lives on in this building through the policy she fought for and the countless people that she mentored,” Senator Cannizzaro said on the floor. “Nina was not only an advocate for the issues she cared about, she dedicated every day of her career to being an advocate for the future of all Nevadans.”

Senator Titus said Laxalt was “a dedicated advocate, a fierce champion for her causes,” and noted her impact on child welfare and other statewide matters. Senator Orrenshall described Laxalt as “steady, straightforward, and principled,” and said she frequently hosted trainings and events that helped new lobbyists and interns learn the legislative process.

The resolution, which the Senate adopted by voice vote, directs the Secretary of the Senate to prepare and transmit a copy to Laxalt’s family. Senator Cannizzaro introduced family members in the chamber after the vote, asking colleagues to welcome them: Laxalt’s daughter Gavin Danielle Burris, granddaughter Grace Burris, son-in-law Brian Burris, and cousin Kristen Laxalt were present for the recognition.

After adoption, the Senate voted to suspend the necessary rules and immediately transmit the resolution to the Assembly.

The Senate recessed later in the day and, at adjournment, was convened in memory of Kathleen Nina Laxalt.
