The South Burlington City Council unanimously approved a resolution Feb. 18 dedicating a park feature as “the Overlook at Underwood Park” in recognition of Richard Underwood and his family.
Parks staff presented a draft resolution that traces the family’s historical ownership of the land—members of the Underwood family bought the parcel in 1921 and Richard Underwood served as a city assessor for nearly three decades, according to the resolution text. Patricia Underwood Weaver, a family member, told the council the Overlook area included the family’s barn and home and the family would be pleased with the recognition.
Councilors discussed whether to develop a broader naming policy for parks going forward but ultimately voted to approve the specific dedication. The resolution authorizes that the park feature be identified as the Overlook at Underwood Park and notes that staff will produce a sign; park staff said a new sign would be produced when weather allows.
The council also noted it will consider developing a naming policy at a later date so future dedications follow a consistent process.
