South Burlington presented a walkthrough of its new municipal website on Feb. 18 and encouraged residents to try the redesigned pages and sign up for topic-based notifications.
Communications and Outreach Manager Andy Brumbaugh said the city chose CivicPlus for a redesign that improves mobile display and accessibility, implements a subscription-based notifications center; adds a built-in agenda center, bid module and search; and supports Google Translate and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Brumbaugh said the launch also coincided with a new online permitting system, reducing the need for residents to make in-person trips to city offices.
The website’s features highlighted by staff include a “mega menu” navigation, department pages with photo-led templates, a notification center that allows residents to subscribe to agendas, news and bids, and back-end tools that allow most department staff to edit pages without developer support. Brumbaugh said the city will fine-tune redirects and address legacy link issues while Google’s crawler indexes the new site.
Councilors praised the design and the staff effort; several asked about enterprise options, password and account management, and legacy link redirects. Brumbaugh said staff can create manual redirects for high-priority links and will work with the council on any outstanding items.
