Council hears update on business-license processing; staff says June 20 deadline stands

Members of the Montgomery City Council on Feb. 18 asked for an update on business-license processing and whether the city would honor a June 20 application deadline for businesses seeking renewed or new licenses.
Councilmember Miss Beard asked staff where the office stood on processing pending applications and whether the city would be able to "get to everybody by the 20 first." Staff replied they were processing applications as quickly as possible and confirmed that the ordinance deadline is June 20. Staff said that if the city received an application by the deadline, even if payment was incomplete, the application would be considered on time.
"If they send that application in, it's $14 or nothing at all. As long as we received the application, they have tried to do it, then they won't be late," a city staff speaker said. Staff added they would consider a grace period if workloads made it necessary, but also noted that the ordinance as written sets the deadline and the council would have to change the ordinance to extend it.
Council members urged staff to contact applicants and to consider limited extensions where appropriate. The transcript records no formal vote to change the deadline.
The council discussed outreach and staff capacity and asked that staff continue to contact applicants ahead of the deadline so businesses are not surprised by enforcement actions.
