City to launch metaverse commemoration for 1965 voting rights march

The mayor said the virtual application will allow users with internet access and a web browser (no special equipment required) to "virtually march the same path used by civil rights leaders and legends and others pushing for equal voting rights, 60 years ago." The experience will trace the civil rights trail from the Saint Jude campus to the Alabama State Capitol and is intended to support tourism, education and the city's Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods grant efforts.
The mayor said the city and county will coordinate to support the initiative and expect thousands of visitors to engage with the in-person events and digital experience during the anniversary events. The project will be publicized with marketing and advertisement and aims to blend historical commemoration with new technology to increase public participation in the anniversary programming.
