Eastside High teacher Heather Wood a finalist for teacher of the year

Heather Wood, an environmental science and biology teacher at Eastside High School, said she is a finalist for teacher of the year and called the recognition “such an honor.”
Wood, a 22-year classroom veteran, told meeting attendees that the relationships she has formed with students, athletes, their families and coworkers are the aspect of her work she is most proud of. “My students are always and will always be my source of motivation,” she said.
Wood said she has built lasting connections that she sometimes sees reflected when former students appear at community events or at the school. She said that one teacher or coach who believes in a student can make a difference and that she strives to give students the confidence to succeed. “I want my students to take away that they feel valued and supported and encouraged to know that they can make a positive difference in the world,” she said.
Wood described Eastside as a ‘‘special place’’ and credited the school’s administration and staff for helping create a culture she said is ‘‘unmatched.’’ She said she was grateful for encouragement from colleagues and students and that she wants to represent her schools and Newton County in her role as a finalist.
