District to buy K–12 school supplies for back-to-school fair; administration will formalize fundraising approval process

Waukegan CUSD 60 staff told trustees on Feb. 18 that the district will purchase K–12 school-supply kits to distribute at the 2025 back-to-school resource fair and that a small fundraising pilot tied to the event had generated $1,071 to date.
Board members raised concerns about a recent fundraising solicitation that went to families and asked why families were asked to contribute to the resource fair when the board has funded the event in the past and community sponsors typically underwrite it. Deputy Moten and other staff said the fundraiser was intended as an experimental, supplemental source to fill any additional needs beyond the board-funded supply purchase; staff said the fundraiser proceeds would be used only to buy items not already provided by the district allocation.
Superintendent LeBaron said staff will build a review process so proposed fundraisers tied to districtwide events are approved at the district level before being promoted to families, to avoid perception and equity concerns. The committee did not take formal action on the purchase at the meeting; staff said they will proceed with purchasing supplies and will also document and standardize a fundraising-approval workflow for the district.
