Fiscal court approves 80 tons of road salt, discusses road maintenance and storage arrangements

Ballard County fiscal court voted to approve purchasing approximately 80 tons of road salt at about $100 per ton and confirmed storage and weighing arrangements with the Carlisle State Road Department.
Road department staff reported plans to haul salt the next day and noted that the county will store material at the Carlisle facility, which has a loader with a scale the county can use to track deliveries. Court members discussed typical application sites (hills, courthouse stops, ambulance and health department locations, and intersections) and said the state Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has been helpful with additional needs.
During discussion, members considered whether the county should stockpile salt annually and noted past unsuccessful attempts to cover stockpiles with tarps. The court approved Riverway Ag in Metropolis as a vendor and confirmed the account; court members said the vendor is one they already use. The motion to purchase the salt and approve Riverway Ag carried with the court’s assent.
The court also heard routine road updates from Todd, who reported ongoing repairs and readiness work; one specific culvert replacement in the Bethlehem Bridge / Frager Road area drew positive comments from neighbors, the court said. No additional road construction contracts were awarded at the meeting.
