Recreation director says $552,000 pool grant is awarded; playground land acquisition remains the bottleneck

Grosse Ile Recreation Director Zade told the commission on Feb. 6 that the township was awarded a $552,000 pool grant from Wayne County but that the project faces a temporary hold while county steps complete its next administrative steps.
“We were awarded that grant,” Zade said. “There was a freeze for all grants… I believe it's been released, but there is a small hold. We are still in the process of getting this whole project done. We are just waiting for the next steps from Wayne County.”
Zade said the recreation department has completed architectural designs and paid engineering costs; permits are secured and the township has ‘everything done on our end’ pending Wayne County action.
On playground planning, Zade told the commission that acquiring suitable land on Grosse Ile has proved difficult. He said the department wants a new, visible playground on Macomb Street and is prioritizing a location that will be a “highlight of the street.” He added that even with available millage money the township must balance competing capital needs—marina, farm maintenance and other recreation facilities—so purchases and installations are staged over multiple budget years.
During the discussion Jamieson, the township board liaison, repeated that playground funding and location discussions are ongoing and cautioned against conflating separate projects (for example, a DDA park proposal for Lions Park) with the recreation department’s playground plan.
No formal vote or final site decision was taken at the Feb. 6 meeting; staff described the status as planning and land acquisition work in progress and said follow‑up coordination with the township manager and liaison will continue.
