Planning commission adopts 2025 work plan, reappoints officers; master plan and tree policy top priorities

The Canton Township Planning Commission approved its 2025 work plan and re-nominated the existing slate of officers at the close of Tuesday’s meeting.

Erin (planning staff) presented the annual report and the 2025 work program required under the Michigan Planning Enabling Act. The work plan listed ten priorities, led by final adoption and implementation of the township’s master plan, followed by zoning ordinance updates tied to the new master plan, and several sub-area or specialty plans. Erin told commissioners the master plan was available for public comment and that subsequent ordinance amendments and implementation steps would follow.

Commissioners voted unanimously to recommend the work plan to the township board. Commissioner Foster moved to recommend approval and Commissioner Lee supported the motion; the roll-call vote was unanimous in favor. At the meeting’s end the commission re-nominated its existing officers by voice vote; Chairperson Zuber accepted renomination and commissioners indicated support for retaining the current vice-chair and secretary.

Why it matters: the work plan sets staff and commission priorities for 2025, including several legislative and programmatic tasks that will shape future development reviews, such as implementation of the master plan, tree-planting/urban forestry efforts and targeted ordinance updates.

Next steps: the planning commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to the township board of trustees; staff will continue the public master-plan comment period and prepare associated ordinance changes.
