Elko High Robotics team demonstrates robots, highlights machining and coding skills

Members of Elko High School’s FIRST Robotics and FTC teams presented robots and described their engineering process at the Feb. 3 Elko County School District meeting.
Students said the team operates two programs—FTC and FRC—and integrates the work with advanced manufacturing and computer science classes. "We just got a new CNC mill," the team said, and students described learning mills, lathes and Fusion 360 CAD software to design and manufacture parts. One student described coding the FTC robot in Java and loading the Android-based control app to the control hub; FRC coding requires firmware and motor-controller work.
The students demonstrated a prototype that uses mecanum wheels to move laterally as well as forward and described an elevator mechanism used to hang game pieces. The team recounted recent competition experience: rebuilding electronics after an electrical fire during a practice event, earning a Rookie Inspiration award at a competition, and supply-chain challenges that led to a 10-day build before a Las Vegas event.
Brandon Carter, identified as club president, said the team collaborates with suppliers and other teams for parts and leverages district CTE equipment. Mr. Stone, a staff supporter, highlighted how CTE courses let students apply classroom skills in real projects. Board members encouraged the team to report back on competition results.
