Board members held a random-draw order for final candidate remarks before casting ballots. The first round produced two top vote-getters — Chad Deardorff and Christina Dugan — who advanced to a final round. In the decisive round, Dugan received the five votes needed for the majority and the board chair administered the oath.
The outcome followed brief closing remarks by candidates. Eric Miller told the board he was “comfortable dealing and trying to balance the different interests” that come with the role. Candidates emphasized experience in education, public safety, and community service during the short pitches the board allowed before voting.
President Rice administered the oath. Dr. Dugan repeated the oath and signed the document the board clerk retained.
The board’s selection fills an immediate vacancy; the board noted the appointment will be followed by a formal written acceptance and filing. The superintendent and board members encouraged unsuccessful candidates to consider circulating nominating petitions if they wish to run in the next election.
Votes at a glance: in the final round, Dugan secured a five-vote majority; several directors had earlier split first-round ballots that produced Deardorff and Dugan as the top two.
The board immediately seated Dugan beside Director Herman and Director Kohler; members and the superintendent welcomed her to the board.
