Story County supervisors read Black History tribute, approve minutes, personnel actions and consent agenda

The Story County Board of Supervisors opened its Feb. 18, 2025 meeting with a reading honoring Willow Juanita Ewing as part of a Black History Month series and then moved through routine business, approving minutes, personnel actions and the consent agenda.
The board read a short biography noting that Willow Juanita Ewing graduated from Ames High in 1922, earned a bachelor’s degree in horticulture from Iowa State (referred to in the reading as the college) and later served as head of the biology department at Alabama State Teachers College (now Alabama State University). The reading said Ewing and others helped establish the Montgomery Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in 1937 and that the family at one time opened their home in Ames to Black Iowa State students during the Great Depression. The board credited the Ames History Museum for historical text and photos used in the reading.
The board then approved minutes from its Feb. 11 meeting. Supervisor Lisa moved approval of the minutes and Supervisor Latifa seconded; Supervisors Heddens, Basel and Merkin were recorded as voting "aye" and the minutes were approved.
The board approved personnel actions as presented; the motion passed with recorded "aye" votes from Supervisors Fazell, Edmonds and Merkin. The consent agenda was approved without items pulled.
Following routine business, supervisors reported liaison assignments and upcoming meetings. Supervisors mentioned attendance at local housing meetings, the Central Iowa Regional Housing Authority meeting, Story County Housing Trust, a StoryCom quarterly meeting, a NEPA executive committee meeting, a Freedom Fund banquet and other outreach events scheduled for the coming days.
The board closed the meeting after a motion to adjourn and recorded unanimous "aye" votes for adjournment from the supervisors present.
