The Hawthorne City Council accepted a report Jan. 28 that the city has secured Proposition 40 (California) funding through the Baldwin Hills and Urban Watershed Conservancy to renovate a park restroom and incorporate accessibility and sustainability features.
Mayor Pro Tem Katrina Manning said the Prop. 40 program (California Clean Water, Clean Air, Safe Neighborhoods and Parks Act of 2002) funds projects to preserve and enhance parks and open space. She said the city plans to use the funds to upgrade doors and ADA features, add grab bars, install energy-efficient LED lighting and hand dryers, introduce drought-tolerant landscaping and water-saving fixtures, and consider rainwater harvesting and rain gardens to reduce runoff.
Staff gave a preliminary schedule: design is planned from April to August 2025 and construction is targeted to start in October 2025.
