Senate approves weekend adjournment resolution and introduces four bills on data, divestment and property claims

The Senate approved a joint resolution setting a weekend adjournment for Friday, Feb. 21, 2025, and ordering the two chambers to reconvene no later than Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025.
The approval came by voice vote after the president (presiding officer) put the question on JRS 14. After that action, senators read the first readings of four bills: S.70, S.71, S.72 and S.73. Each bill received its first reading on the floor and was referred to a standing committee for consideration.
S.70 was read as “an act relating to data brokers and personal information” and was introduced as coming from Senator Clarkson and others; it was referred to the Senate Committee on Economic Development, Housing and General Affairs. S.71 was read as “an act relating to consumer data privacy and online surveillance,” also introduced by Senator Clarkson and others, and likewise was referred to the Committee on Economic Development, Housing and General Affairs. S.72, introduced by Senator Perchlik and others, was read as “an act relating to divestment of state pension funds of investments in the fossil fuel industry” and was referred to the Committee on Government Operations. S.73 was read as “an act relating to requiring notice of an adverse possession claim to the record property owner” and was referred to the Committee on Judiciary.
Senators made several scheduling announcements after the bill introductions. Committee meeting times noted on the record included Senate Health and Welfare at 10 a.m., Senate Transportation at 10 a.m., and Senate Appropriations at 1 p.m.; the president announced room assignments as recorded. The Senate Education Committee meeting was canceled for the day because the education committee chair and two other members were ill; the session was postponed to a future date.
Later in the afternoon, the senator from Chittenden moved that the Senate stand adjourned until 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19; the body voted by voice and the motion carried.
