Local wellness programs and events: Medicare diabetes program, recreation projects, Chef's Feast and Adopt‑a‑School rollout

Lisa Burbage said Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program classes remain open to new participants in Summerville and Goose Creek for Medicare‑eligible older adults. "If you know anyone who lives in those areas, these are free programs if they're on Medicare," she said.

Morgan Huey highlighted physical‑activity events and civic infrastructure that support community health, noting the city's spring recreation guide is available and public events such as a Building Healthy Communities 5K at Hampton Park (this Saturday, 9 a.m.) benefit child‑wellness programs. Huey also summarized two recent city infrastructure efforts: the Ashley River Crossing (a standalone bicycle‑pedestrian bridge connecting the Medical District to West Ashley and the West Ashley Greenway) and phase 1 funding for the Lowcountry Lowline, a planned 1.6‑mile Peninsula path to expand safe, low‑cost opportunities for active travel and recreation.

Nick Osborne said the organization's 26th annual Chef's Feast (a gala highlighting childhood hunger) is sold out and will draw about 450 attendees; the event showcases local chefs and raises visibility for food‑security work.

Maggie Davis described the impending rollout of a county Adopt‑a‑School initiative branded "Local: Linking Opportunities to Classrooms and Learners," which will publish school profiles of needs and invite businesses to partner on a range of supports. Davis said the program will launch this week and invited committee engagement.

Committee leaders encouraged cross‑agency outreach to school districts and PTAs for 988 resources, curriculum supports and wellness programming; no formal votes or motions were taken on these announcements.
