Yankton school board hears final preparations for Trailhead Learning Center, schedules registration and open house events

YANKTON, S.D. — District staff told the Yankton School District 63-3 board on Jan. 27 that construction and technology installation at the new Trailhead Learning Center are nearing completion and the district will publish registration and event dates to the community ahead of the building’s August opening.
School and technology staff said the building’s wired network is operational, intercom work is nearly complete pending a phone-system upgrade at the administration building, and security cabling and card readers are being installed. Staff also said Promethean classroom panels have been moved into the building and installation was underway.
The district expects an early-childhood screening event on Feb. 27 and said junior-kindergarten and kindergarten registration will be held separately (staff said registration is not the same as the open house, which will happen later). District staff said a postcard with basic information about Trailhead’s opening, grade levels that will be assigned there, registration dates and the open-house/dedication schedule will be mailed to every household and PO box in Yankton next week.
“This is kind of a showcase before we do our last big public show for the open house,” a district technology staff member said while describing remaining work and test plans for phones, intercoms and wireless coverage. Another staff member described final tasks including wiring for HVAC controls and connecting cameras and badge readers.
Board members and administrators thanked the facilities and technology teams for ongoing work preparing the building and for coordination across departments.
The presentation included operational details staff said are complete or in progress: wired network and main network closet live; gym-network and back-closet power outstanding; intercom waiting on phone-system upgrades; security cabling completed and readers being connected; Promethean panels installed in kindergarten classrooms; and a plan to roll an existing Webster phone number into the new Trailhead number so community callers will reach the new center.
Staff did not propose any board action on Trailhead during the meeting; the report was informational. Questions from board members focused on final testing and whether wireless and phone systems will be fully functional for the Feb. 27 screening date.

Looking ahead, staff said they will continue final checks and expect to invite board members for a final tour prior to the public open house and dedication in August.
